Beginning a painting, I work with abandon. Getting it down quickly, especially on location where the light is changing, is essential. Even in the studio my lay-ins are fast and furious. Establishing the rhythm of the piece and its abstract base is for me an intuitive process, best accomplished with loose patches of color, patterns of light and dark that will remain the abstract foundation of the painting. In each painting my goal is to capture the essence of what I see and feel, leaving out that which is unnecessary - to say more with less. |
